Hip and Knee Pain Q & A

What causes hip pain?

Hip pain is a common complaint that can develop from a number of causes. Common conditions that lead to hip pain include:

  • Hip bursitis
  • Sports hernias
  • Muscle sprains and strains
  • Arthritis
  • Sciatica
  • Tendinitis

Hamstring injuries can also lead to hip pain. Your hamstring is the muscle that runs down the back of your leg from your buttocks to the top of your knee. You may be at risk of a hamstring injury if you play a sport that requires sprinting, such as soccer or basketball, that can cause a strain of the muscle.

What causes knee pain?

Like hip pain, knee pain is also very common and develops from a number of causes ranging from injury to underlying general medical conditions.

Common causes of knee pain include:

Patellofemoral pain syndrome

Also referred to as runner’s knee, patellofemoral pain syndrome is a condition that causes you to feel pain at the front of your knee or kneecap. Overuse and muscle imbalance may increase your risk of this type of knee pain.

Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries

ACL injuries refer to a tear in one of the four ligaments that hold your shinbone to your thighbone. You may be at risk of an ACL injury if you play a sport that requires a quick change in direction, such as soccer or basketball.

Other common causes of knee pain include arthritis, dislocation of the knee, or torn meniscus. You may also develop knee pain if you have an injury to your hip that causes you to change your gait.
