Hand, Wrist and Elbow Pain Q & A
What causes hand, wrist, or elbow pain?
You may develop hand, wrist, or elbow pain from a number of causes. Common causes include:
Carpal tunnel syndrome
Carpal tunnel syndrome causes pain or numbness in the hands or arm and develops when your median nerve gets squeezed as it goes through the carpal tunnel canal in your wrist.
Trigger finger
Trigger finger causes pain and stiffness in your finger. You may also feel as though the finger is catching when you extend and bend it. You may develop trigger finger if one of the pulleys, which is a band of tissue that runs along the tendon in your finger, becomes inflamed or thick.
Tennis elbow
Tennis elbow causes inflammation of the tendon that runs along the outside of your elbow. It often develops from repetitive motion of the elbow. In addition to tennis players, you may be at risk of developing tennis elbow if you’re a painter or a butcher.
Sprains and arthritis can also lead to hand, wrist, or elbow pain.
